Phosphorus: Pollutant Sources

The selections you have made indicate that there is an impairment or threat to the designated use of your water resource.

The next step is to conduct a watershed assessment and evaluation, which should include at a minimum: 1. identification of the pollutant source(s), and 2. identification of the critical area -- or that pollutant source area having the most significant impact on the impaired use of the receiving water.

Significant pollutant sources can be determined through visual inspection of the watershed, by means of a pollutant budget, through use of sophisticated models, or through a combination of all the above. The type of watershed assessment and evaluation conducted also depends on the information you have available.

If you do not have digitized data or land use information, use your best judgement and best available information to select the primary pollutant source from the list below.

Possible BMPs will be suggested based on current recommended practices for the selected pollutant sources. Optimally, the BMPs selected should be integrated into systems of BMPs.

It will be your responsibility to choose the most appropriate BMPs from the suggestions you will be given based on the pollutant source you have selected.
