To perform a keyword search, simply select a search type (title, author, or title-and-abstract), then input one or more keywords to search for. You may further narrow your search by selecting a second topic and keyword(s). Note that keywords within the same keyword field have an implicit "or" between them. For example, if you perform a keyword search of type, "title and abstract", with keywords "urban" and "stream", your search will result in all articles in which either keyword appears in the title or the abstract. You can narrow your search by only looking for articles with "urban" and "stream" in their titles. Do this by using both keyword fields.
To perform a Topic search, click on "topic search" and choose from the topic index. Once you've chosen a topic, you'll see more options in the You may expand your search by including in your search articles where your topic is one of the article's secondary topics. This means that an article will be returned if the primary topic matches your search or if your search matches one of the article's secondary topics.
You may also broaden your search by including articles that reference a subtopic of your chosen topic. For example, if you do a search for articles with topic 3.5 Pesticides, your search will result in only articles where the topic is 3.5. By including subtopics, the same search will match articles with topics 3.52 Herbicides, 3.521 Paraquat, 3.53 Insecticides, and 3.531 Organochlorines as well. This means that an article will be returned if the topic matches your search or if your search matches one of the article's sub-topics.
